Acupuncture and Fertility

First I would like to say that in my acupuncture practice it is the women who seek treatment and it takes some persuasion to see the male partner or to get him to undergo some tests, treatments are very beneficial for both partners.

Here are some of the aspects covered in the initial consultation:

  • An important factor to consider is the couple’s age. More urgency is required if she is in her mid to late thirties – approaching 40.The biological clock is ticking and we need to work hand in hand with the medical profession and do some tests.
  • Acupuncture is a holistic treatment that’s why we then look at general health and fitness of the couple. The weight plays an important role. If the Body Mass Index (BMI) is too low or too high hormones can be affected and the menstrual cycle can be irregular. A women’s BMI should ideally be between 20 and 25. Being overweight might affect the sperm quality in men.
  • Stress is a major factor to play havoc with hormones. That’s why we look at the balance between work and living/relaxation. Acupuncture is very helpful to relax you and manage your stress levels.
  • The main focus of course will be on reproductive health issues, looking at your cycle and possible irregularities. This is where acupuncture can balance aspects like long/short cycles, heavy/painful or light and short periods.

There are many issues to consider when trying to have a baby. Ideally you both should allow a minimum of three months to prepare for conception to maximise your health and fitness to have a healthy baby.
